In a bid to improve the effectiveness of the Nigerian Police Force, the Consulate General of the Peoples Republic of China in Lagos has donated some equipment to the Zone 2 Command of the force.

The equipment comprised of nine motorcycles, which is meant to aid the Command in community surveillance, and nine split floor type room air conditioner to enhance the comfort of the police officers in their offices.

The Consul General, His Excellency, Mr. Chao Xiaoliang, who made the donation, yesterday, said the Consulate was appreciative of the efforts of the command in enforcing law and order with its area of jurisdiction.

He said: “This event has three objectives. First it is to show our appreciation for the efforts made by Nigerian Police Force, Zone 2 Command, in enforcing rule and law, particularly in protecting Chinese nationals and companies.

“Second, we would like to donate some equipment, three motorcycles and three air conditioners respectively to Area E and Area F commands in Lagos State and Sagamu Area Command in Ogun State. In our work contact with police officers, we found that some police commands suffered from lack of patrol motorcycles and their offices had no air conditioners. We do hope these gifts can enhance the ability of the police to enforce laws and improve officers’ working environment.

“The third objective is to establish a platform to improve the friendship between Chinese community and the Nigerian Police Force in our consular district. In recent years, more and more Chinese people come to Nigeria to do business and make investment, contributing actively to local economic and social development. However, they also face serious safety challenges.”

Xiaoliang noted that both Nigeria and China still faced the arduous task of development, stressing that the two countries should maintain the sound momentum of high-level exchanges, strengthen friendly exchanges in all fields and render mutual understanding and support.

The Assistant Inspector General of Police in charge of Zone 2 Command, AIG Adamu Ibrahim, who received the equipment, noted that it would help the police in crime fighting.

“I want to assure that Lagos and Ogun states and the environs under my watch will continue to be safe and secured as we are not resting on our oars to strive and ensure the safety and security of all. Your kind donation to the Zone 2 Command is indeed a moral booster to the respective commands in the command. The donation will indeed aid in crime fighting, prevention and control within the zone. I thank the Chinese Consulate in particular and the Chinese community in Lagos in general for their kind gesture,” he said.

Ibrahim also used the opportunity to thank the Chinese government and also the entire Chinese community in the country for sponsoring some police personnel to China in July this year for an exchange programme. “The security tour was highly educative and encouraging,” he noted.
