US lawmakers meet Osinbajo, Saraki, Dogara over North-East crisis

Abuja—As the humanitarian crisis thrown up by eight years of Boko Haram war lingers, a congressional delegation from the United States of America, USA, is meeting with Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, and other senior federal government officials on the way forward.
Among the issues of particular interest to the U.S. officials will be the fight against Boko Haram and the humanitarian situation in the North-East.
The visit of the eight-member congressional delegation, led by Senator Christopher Coons, (Democrat, Delaware), a member of the Appropriations, Foreign Relations, Judiciary, Small Business and Entrepreneurship, and Ethics Committees, will last from yesterday till August 31.
A statement from the United States Embassy yesterday, indicated that other members of the delegation include Senator Gary Peters (Michigan); Senator Michael Bennet (Colorado); Representative Lisa Blunt Rochester (Delaware); Representative Terri Sewell (Alabama); Representative Barbara Lee (California); Representative Frederica Wilson (Florida), all Democrats, and Representative Charlie Dent (Pennsylvania), Republican.
The statement disclosed that while in Nigeria, the U.S legislators will meet with a range of high-ranking leaders to gain a fulsome picture of the bilateral relationship between Abuja and Washington.
The team is expected to be briefed by Ambassador W. Stuart Symington and staff before meeting with the Vice President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo, Senate President, Dr. Olusola Saraki, Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, and other members of the National Assembly as well as religious and civil society leaders.
They will also visit Lagos, where trade and investment relations will be the theme, in their meetings with meet with business executives, tour the Egbin Thermal Power Plant, participate in an American Business Council round table, and conclude with a reception featuring alumni of the Young African Leaders Initiative and the Tony Elemelu Foundation.
The delegation is visiting Ghana, Côte d’Ivoire, and The Gambia as part of their West Africa tour.
