Pentathlon Federation needs N75m to host Olympic qualifier, African Championships
Modern Pentathlon Federation of Nigeria Wednesday took a major step towards the successful hosting of the World Youth Olympic qualifier (Africa) and Senior African Championships billed for December 4-11 at the Teslim Balogun Stadium, Surulere, Lagos.
The federation signed a marketing agreement with two firms, Audio Visual Campaigns Limited and Sound Meknitz Limited in a bid to take the tournament to the corporate community for their support, sponsorship and partnership.
Signing the agreement in a crowded press conference at the secretariat of the Nigeria Olympic Committee, President of Modern Pentathlon Federation of Nigeria, Dr Jonathan Nnaji said the Local Organising Committee needs at least N75 million to successfully organise the twin event which is estimated to attract participation from no fewer than 22 countries.
“The marketers will act on behalf of the LOC to negotiate with would be sponsors and partners to source the over N75m required for the hosting of the events,” Nnaji said.
He said although his federation had written to the Ministry of Sports for funds, they were not going to wait for government.
“There has been no assurance from the authorities and we can’t just fold our hands as time is not on our hands,” Nnaji said.
The president also informed that seven different sub-committees have been set up for the successful hosting of event.
These include, Venue and Facilities/ Technical, Protocol and Logistics Security, Finance and Marketing, Medial/Publicity and Medical Committee.
He also hinted that the protocol and logistic committee has approved Beni Gold apartment and Suite, Victoria Island, Lagos as the official Hotel.
