Egbodi said the agency had to embark on a regular verification inspection exercise with a view to ensuring that facilities are kept in check. He also disclosed that there over 120 port facilities across the country with 44 in Lagos alone.

Similarly, the Head of ISPS Committee in NIMASA, Mr. Adebayo Olatoke, enjoined all port security officers to be abreast with Port Security Plan, PSP and Port Facility Security Assessment, PFSA, as this will make them to be alive to their responsibilities as first point of contact at their facility. Olatoke also warned that not being abreast with the PSP and PFSA could render them ineffective in times of security breaches and threats.

The port security expert opined that a secured port environment will lead to increased vessel calls and consequently lead to more businesses for the facilities. He noted that the compliance level has eliminated wharf rats, hawking and even touting within the ports’ vicinity, adding that unlike in the past; one can now import goods and be sure that the goods will arrive intact without the usual dreadful experiences.
