ABUJA—The Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, yesterday, took a swipe at the anti-corruption war of the Federal Government, saying the revelation by the National Bureau of Statistics, NBS, that public officials in the country took N400 billion bribe in one year was an indication that the fight against graft was not yielding any result.

NLC also called on the affected institutions to put in place in-house mechanism to cleanse themselves to stop the cankerworm that had effected the economic growth of the country.

This is even as Mallam Yusuf Ali, SAN, yesterday, expressed shock that the judiciary was ranked as one of the most corrupt institutions in the country by the NBS, next to the Police Force.

Reacting to the NBS revelation, the General Secretary of NLC, Dr. Peter Ozo-Eson, said:  “Well, for such amount of money to be taken as bribe in one year  by public officers clearly demonstrates why we are facing economic challenges and why the country is underdeveloped.

“It also points to the fact, given that this is happening under this regime that has made fighting corruption a principal issue, we are not achieving much yet because if N400 billion can be taken in just one year for bribe shows how critical the corruption situation in the country is.”

Meanwhile, Mallam Yusuf Ali, SAN, yesterday, expressed shock about the high incidents of corruption found in the judicial sector by the National Bureau of Statistics, NBS.

Speaking with journalists in Ilorin, yesterday, Ali said: ‘’The surprising thing to me in this report is the very high incident of corruption found by the NBS in the judicial sector.  I’m shocked because I never thought that it would be  this wide spread, almost to the level of competing with the Nigerian police.”
