Gymnastics Federation opens camp ahead of world championship

The Gymnastics Federation of Nigeria (GFN) says it has drawn an effective programme that will see to the resurgence of the sport in the country.
President of the federation, Prince Kelvin Eruwense who revealed this in Abuja during the week said the focus of his federation will be the discovery of young talents from across the country; even as he insisted that the future of the sport is very bright in the country.
The Gymnastics boss spoke during the closing ceremonies of the two-day First National Open Trials which was organised to select the gymnasts that will represent Nigeria at the world championship coming up next month in Spain.
While regretting the rather deteriorating state of facilities at the national gymnasium, Eruwense also promised that his administration will explore different avenues to ensure that first class training equipment and materials were installed at the gymnasium.
He also urged parents and guardians to always encourage their young ones to embrace the sport which he said will apart from making them to be always fit and healthy has the capacity of serving as a source of meaningful income for them.
The president also promised that the 12 gymnasts who were selected for the world championship will be given the best of attention as they begin camp at the Elite Athletes Hostel of the Abuja National Stadium.
The 12 gymnasts who were selected based on their performance at the trials include; Okosun Prosper from Edo State who won gold at the trials, Awokunle Seun Ojo of Cross River State and Osamudiamen of Edo State who took the silver and bronze medals respectively in the men’s category. The other qualifiers are; Dayo Emmanuel of Oyo State, Michael Adamu and Tuesday Abimbor of Edo State.
In the women’s category, Amenghawon Melvin of Edo State took the gold; Helen Ucheke also of Edo State took silver while Oluwafemi Damilola of Cross River State took the bronze medal. The other qualifiers include; Olayanju Iyanu of Oyo State as well as Fadoju Mercy of Ondo and Patience Akinola of TIG Abuja.
