Executive order: Apapa port sets up joint examination centre
By Udeme Clement
IN line with the new Executive Order of the Federal Government on ease of doing business, the Apapa Customs Command has established a Joint Examination Centre comprising all government agencies approved to conduct examinations, in order to ensure 24 hours operations in the port.
AC Yahaya Idris, who has been posted to the centre by the Customs Area Controller of the Command, as the officer in charge of examination, disclosed this in a chat with Sunday Vanguard, saying that the centre located at APM Terminal will accommodate National Agency for Food, Drugs, Administration and Control, NAFDAC, National Drugs Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, Standards Organisation of Nigeria, SON, Department of State Security, DSS, Police Anti-bomb and other agencies.
According to him, “The essence of the centre is for agencies to view importers declaration on Customs platform, to know the date other agencies will be involved in joint examination of cargoes, to reduce interface between importers and officers, to input their examination reports in the system, to ensure that containers are released without delay, so as to meet the yearning of government on the new policy. To make the centre accessible for all the agencies and AP Moller, we came up with Apapa Customs Joint Examination Centre dedicated email address (NCSapapa.firstname.lastname@example.org). We equally gave them the Customs telephone numbers to access the platform 24hours.”
He added, “Also, the centre in collaboration with our Public Relations Unit printed handbills to sensitise the public on how to access our new system of doing business, which has paid off without stress. But the challenge now is that some agents are trying to frustrate our efforts by selecting from the confirmed lists the unit usually send to them based on the limitation of containers they can position for examination daily.”
