Etim Ekpo cult killings: Ex-Commissioner, council boss whisked to Abuja
By Emmanuel Ayungbe
UYO—A former Commissioner for Special Duties in Akwa Ibom State and the Chairman of a Transition Committee (names withheld) were, yesterday, moved to Police Force Headquarters, Abuja, in connection with the series of politically-motivated cult killings in of Etim Ekpo Local Government Area.
The duo, who are indigenes of the local government were sighted earlier at Department of Special Anti-Robbery Squad, SARS, Police Headquarters, Ikot Akpan Abia, Uyo, the state capital.
A top Police officer, who spoke to Vanguard on condition of anonymity, said: “The two politicians have no business with SARS. They are here on the request of special operatives dispatched from the Inspector-General of Police to arrest sponsors of the cult war in the local government.
“I work with the SARS, but I don’t know why they are here. I was told operatives from the Force Headquarters, Abuja, kept the men here for security reasons. They have since been taken to Abuja.”
It was gathered that their invitation by the Police for questioning may not be unconnected with the cult and politically-motivated killings in Etim Ekpo council, which have claimed scores of lives and destroyed property worth millions of Naira.
Contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer of the state’s Police Command, Chukwu Ikechekwu, said: “As far as I know, Akwa Ibom State Command did not arrest them. But if they were arrested by any other outfit, whether in the zone or Abuja, I am not aware.”
