ASABA—Nigeria Erosion and Watershed Management Project, NEWMAP, has made a public presentation of the engineering designs and other technical details of the five identified flood and erosion sites in Delta State.

The exercise at a workshop in Asaba, was aimed at discussing all technical options that will guarantee standards in the world bank assisted project.

The identified flood and erosion sites for the first phase of the project, include Owanta in Ika North East, Obomkpa and Nkwu-Nzu communities in Aniocha North, Ubulu-Uku in Aniocha South and Jesse in Ethiope West of the state.

State Commissioner for Environment, Mr John Nani, while declaring the workshop open for the presentation and selection of the engineering design concept, said the exercise was a show of the state government’s commitment to standards.

State Project Coordinator, NEWMAP, Mr. Isaac Ufiofio, who commended the commitment of the Federal and Delta State governments as well as the World Bank towards addressing the devastating effects of erosion and flooding, said quality and standards were key to the execution of the projects.

Earlier in his presentation, Team Leader of AURECON Consulting Firm, Almeroux Loubser, identified irregularities in existing drainages as a major cause of erosions and flooding in the affected localities.
