As the remains of the former Vice President, Dr Alex Ekwueme begins its journey to the mother earth, former students of the institution have pleaded with President Muhammadu Buhari to immortalize him by changing the Federal Polytechnic Oko to Dr. Alex Ekwueme Federal University of Technology.
Chairman, Abuja chapter of the Federal Polytechnic Oko,  Alumnus Association, Comrade Henry Nnebe made the appeal at a testimonial organized to honour the late Vice President in Abuja

Nnebe recollected the sole efforts of Dr. Ekwueme in establishing the Polytechnic which was initially Anambra State Polytechnic before it was changed by the Federal Government to Federal Polytechnic.

Meanwhile, indication emerged that South East Governors might ask the Federal government to immortalize the late Second Republic Vice President.
Director General of the South East Governor’s Forum and chairman of South East  Governor’s Committee on the burial of Dr. Alex Ekwueme, Prof. Simon Otuanya, and the Head of the Media and Communications Sub-committee of the burial committee, Chief Maja Umeh gave the indication while briefing newsmen in Enugu, yesterday, on the burial arrangements of the former Vice President.
Dr Ekwueme, who passed on at a London hospital on November 19, 2017, will be interred on February 2, 2018, at his home town, Oko, in Orumba North local government area of Anambra state.
However, the Alumni Association has vowed it would do everything possible to ensure that the Federal Government immortalized the late Ekwueme by naming the institution he brought to his home town to a university of technology.
According Comrade Nnebe , “We will do everything we can to ensure that the President and his cabinet consider the renaming and upgrading of the Federal Polytechnic Oko, to Dr. Alex Ekwueme Federal University of Technology.
“If the Federal Government wants to immortalize him,  it is to make the Polytechnic a university of technology. The Alumni will not take anything less than that.”
Speaking at the testimonial, the former Chairman of Police Service Commission, PSC,  Chief Simeon Okeke described the late former Vice President as a quintessential icon that worked for the good of the people.
