The NWF boss equally highlighted the importance of the flag-hoisting ceremony, stating that it signifies friendship amongst participating nations as well as their culture.

“Today we are gathered because all 54 nations of Africa that are expected to participate will be recognized.

“The symbols of the countries are their flags. This is about their culture; it’s about friendship, it’s about the official signal of the tournament that is going to take place here in five days.

“As we raise the flags, it signals that the competition is going to take place. It signals that it is going to be about friendship. It signals that it will be under the rules of the United World Wrestling,” the 1999 World Champion concluded.

Also speaking at the hoisting of the flags, the Rivers State governor Barr Nyesom Wike commended the Local Organising Committee (LOC) for preparing well ahead of the championships.

“ I sincerely appreciate and thank the LOC for the wonderful job done to organise the African Wrestling Championships.

“I am aware that with what I have seen, the state is set, and I will want to believe that they will give us the best,” he said. The governor thanked the NWF under the leadership of Dr Igali for making it possible for Rivers to secure the hosting right of the championship.
