By Kingsley Omonobi-Abuja
The police say operatives of the Intelligence Response Squad have arrested five members of a kidnap gang allegedly behind the abduction of the Unit Commander of MOPOL 55, Aba, Abia State, ASP Solomon Aniefiok, and collected ransom for his release.
During the operation to arrest the suspected kidnappers, one of them was killed in a shootout while a sister of the alleged gang leader, Osioma Paul, said to be the arms and ammunition keeper for the gang, was arrested.
A statement by the police said Aniefiok had, on January 14, gone to check his men in the field when he was blocked and kidnapped by AK47 rifle carrying kidnappers.
“He was released three days later after ransom was paid”, the statement said.
“Irked by the development, IGP Ibrahim Idris deployed the intelligence response team IRT to Abia to put the kidnappers to justice.
“Based on the IGP directive, one of the best IRT teams was deployed and, after six days of unrelenting follow up, five of the suspected kidnappers were arrested while one of them met his waterloo during gun battle with IRT operatives”.
The police said efforts to arrest the remaining gang members were in progress.
