NO fewer than 500 elderly Bayelsans from Kaiama community in Kolokuma-Opokuma Local Government Area of Bayelsa State have benefited from the National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, medical outreach programme.
Tagged: Health Initiative for Rural Dwellers, the programme is an initiative of the Director-General of the Corps, Brigadier-General SZ Kazaure and is aimed at enhancing accessibility to health care services by rural dwellers.
Members of the corps, made up of medical doctors, nurses, pharmacists and laboratory scientists were on ground to conduct free medical screening, examination, test and sensitization campaign, sharing of drugs and mosquito nets to the elderly indigenes of the area.
Speaking during the flag-off ceremony at Kaiama, the Bayelsa State coordinator of the NYSC, Mrs. Loto Bolade, said the programme is aimed at utilizing the skills of corps medical personnel towards reaching out to the less privileged in the society.
Mrs. Bolade also noted that since the programme was launched in Bayelsa in 2015 it has made a lot of gains, as hundreds of persons have benefited from the exercise across communities in the eight local government areas of the state.
The traditional ruler of Kaiama community, Sir. Jerry O Burutolu, commended the Federal Government for sustaining the NYSC programme and praised the initiators of the programme for their empathy for the rural people.
Responding on behalf of the beneficiaries, a retired civil servant, Elder Miebi Markson thanked the NYSC for bringing succour to the less privileged in the area, describing the exercise as the first of its kind.
“As aged people, we need period health screening, but sometimes it is expensive. NYSC should be commended for bringing this free medical programme to our doorsteps because it will save a lot of lives. Some persons rely on self-medication because of the cost of getting quality healthcare. I commend them a lot,” he said.
